Ileana struggled for months to find health insurance for her daughter. She tried applying for Medicaid on her own, but navigating the complex web of insurance options felt daunting – until she found the Pathways to Coverage program.
From navigating complex insurance options to overcoming language barriers, many Texans find themselves lost in a maze of paperwork and uncertainty. To address this growing need, the Bexar County Community Health Collaborative has expanded Pathways to Coverage, a program designed to guide residents in finding health coverage and care. The initiative now serves 34 counties in South Texas, including the Coastal Bend and the Rio Grande Valley.
“Corpus Christi and the Valley have the highest levels of uninsured. Oftentimes they don't have access to technology or know that these services are available,” said program director Anel Trevino. “So we make sure we have people ready to help in those areas.”
Navigators are working throughout the region to raise awareness about affordable health coverage options such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Marketplace health plans. These navigators help individuals and families find plans that fit their needs and connect those who may not qualify for traditional coverage to other resources.
Stephanie is one of several navigators who joined the team following the program’s recent expansion. Based in Corpus Christi, Stephanie was inspired to join the program because of her own experiences.
“I personally know how it feels to go through life alone and not have the resources or support,” she said. “I don't want anyone, just because of what's happened to them in life, to miss out on help that's out there for them.”
Pathways to Coverage goes beyond enrollment by providing year-round support to help individuals maximize their health plans, navigate plan changes, and resolve enrollment issues. This comprehensive approach bridges gaps between residents and local resources, ensuring access to care for those most in need.
Ileana’s experience highlights the program’s impact. She not only found a health coverage plan for her daughter, but also received Spanish-language guidance throughout the enrollment process and was connected with a doctor.
“I have more peace of mind because my daughter has good insurance, and we have peace and tranquility in the family,” Ileana said.
In Corpus Christi, where community support is essential for accessing services, Pathways to Coverage represents a significant step toward reducing health disparities. By helping individuals secure health coverage, the program strengthens the overall health and well-being of the community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 16.4% of Texans remain uninsured. Programs like Pathways to Coverage are essential to reducing disparities and equipping residents with the resources they need to lead healthier lives.
The program focuses on underserved populations, including rural communities, non-English speakers, and families with limited access to technology. By offering multilingual assistance, Pathways to Coverage ensures that language is never a barrier to accessing healthcare.
