What is Medicaid Unwinding?

At the beginning of the pandemic, Family First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) was enacted, requiring Medicaid Programs keep people continuously enrolled through the end of the month in which the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) ends.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, signed into law on December 29, 2022 declared March 31, 2023 as the end date for the continuous enrollment provision and will be phased out between April 1 to December 31, 2023

States can begin disenrolling members no longer eligible starting April 1, 2023.
